Impact of Exogenous Spermine Application on the Vase Life of Cut Rose Flowers ‘Dolce Vita’
Authors
Abstract:
Senescence is an integral part of the normal developmental cycle of plants and can be traced in cell, tissue and organ level. This work was focused on the efficiency of post-harvest treatment with the free polyamine spermine (Spm) to extend the vase life of cut rose flowers as an anti-senescence compound. Spm treatment was applied at the rates of 0, 1, 2 and 4 mM. Some morphological, biochemical and physiological characteristics of tested cut roses (Rosa hybrida cv. ‘Dolce Vita’) such as; flower diameter, water uptake, relative fresh weight, electrolyte leakage, malondialdehyde content, guiacole peroxidase activity, hydrogen peroxide content and vase life were evaluated. The effects of a pulsing application of the polyamine on the mentioned traits were significant and treatment with Spm effectively delayed the senescence of roses, especially when applied at 4 mM concentration. Polyamine treatment resulted in a notable decrease in petal electrolyte leakage due to its cationic and anti-peroxidative characters. In addition to the anti-ethylene property, the cationic character of polyamines may play an important role in determining the vase life of cut flowers.

Improvement in vase life of cut rose cv. “Dolce Vita” by preharvest foliar application of calcium chloride and salicylic acid
Rosa hybrida L. is an important commercial cut flower. Salicylic acid (SA) and calcium chloride (CaCl2) act as endogenous signal molecules responsible for growth parameters in plants. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of preharvest SA and CaCl2 treatments in extending the vase life of cut rose flowers. Therefore, a factorial experiment based on completely randomized design with ...

In this study, the effects of peppermint and rose extracts on delaying the aging of Alstroemeria spp. cut flowers were investigated. Peppermint and rose extracts were used in concentrations of 10, 20 and 30%. Quantitative and qualitative traits such as vase life, flower opening index, water uptake, fresh weight, dry weight, population of bacteria in vase solution and stem end, ion leakage, decr...

full textThe Effect of Ethanol and Cycloheximide on the Vase Life of Cut Flowers Alstroemeria (Alstroemeria hybrida)
Alstroemeria is one of the most beautiful flowers in the family Alstroemeriaceae. One of the major problems of this cut flower is short life of leaves, this fact reduces the economic value of this cut flower. Abscission of petal before wilting is also considered as one of the most important problems of this flower. Petals of this flower are very sensitive to ethylene. A factorial experiment bas...
